Mike Kimeu, Program Director
Mike, a University of Nairobi graduate who also worked with youth at the Christian Children's Fund, spends a great deal of his time counseling children and families, trouble-shooting on problems from health crises to vocational placements . He is the main planner of lectures, workshops and trips, as well as meetings of our local Machakos professional advisory board, a group of community leaders who are brought together to marshal resources and support for the program.
Alex Mutiso, Senior Founding Teacher
Alex, an Adult Education Department teacher, who has worked with street children in Machakos for over a decade. He has been instrumental in designing Jitegemee.s program and teaches basic math, literacy and communication skills to vocational students in the first phase of our rehabilitation class as well as their guardians.
Elizabeth Nzivo, Teacher and Administration Assistant
Elizabeth is an energetic young person with several years experience teaching at a local high school. She assists in teaching Jitegemee's vocational students and coordinating support for students in formal schooling. Elizabeth also teaches "Living Values" education curriculum to both formal and vocational students, designed to help young people make better life choices in their personal lives.

Kate Aksadi
Kate Ranweiler Aksadi is a founding board member of Jitegemee, Inc., and served as the organization's Secretary-Treasurer from 2001 to 2004. She most recently worked as the office manager of a Boston-area non-profit organization before taking time off to move to Morocco where she is raising her young son and learning the Moroccan dialect of Arabic. Kate holds a B.A. in English and French from Creighton University.
Michelle Brooks
Michelle Brooks is a principal with Weston Presidio, a private equity investment fund. Prior to joining Weston Presidio, Michelle was Editorial Director for Experience, Inc. and a founder of Lookout Media, a Boston-based writing services firm. Michelle received her A.B. in Government from Harvard College and her MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School. Michelle lives in Cambridge, MA.
Helena Halperin, Board Chair
Helena Halperin is a lecturer at Roxbury Community College and the author of I Laugh so I Won't Cry: Kenya's Women Tell the Stories of Their Lives (Africa World Press, 2005). Helena spent 14 months in Western Kenya, living with a family of subsistence farmers and teaching in a village school, and has traveled extensively throughout the country conducting research for her book. She holds a BA from UC Berkeley and Masters degrees from Rutgers and Simmons. She is married to Bertrand Halperin, a professor of physics at Harvard, and lives in Arlington, MA when she's not in Kenya.
Lucas Kimang'a
Lucas Kimang'a is a Doctor of pharmacy student at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. He is also a member of the Rotary Club of Alderwood-Terrace and the Rotary Club of Worcester. Prior to moving to the United States, Lucas worked for AAR Health Services, Kenya.s most well-known health care coverage company, and was active with several volunteer projects. He was a President of the Rotaract club of Nairobi (1997-98), Member of Uvumbuzi, Member of Friends Of Nairobi National Park among others. While in Kenya, he learned the values of sharing with the less fortunate from his parents and grandparents. Lucas lives in Worcester.
Shulamit Kahn
By profession and by disposition, Shu (Shulamit) Kahn is an economist. She is a tenured professor at Boston University (BU) School of Management, teaching courses in economics and statistics. Her present research is about compliance with labor laws, particularly minimum wage and overtime regulations. She is also tracking the status of women in academia, both in her research and for a Boston University faculty committee on diversity. Over the years, she has been on boards and in leadership positions at her synagogue and her children.s schools, dealing with budgets, hiring, oversight, and numerous special projects. Shu lives in Boston with her husband.
Catherine Mosca, Secretary-Treasurer
Catherine Mosca works as an Online Editor for the Tom Peters Company. Prior to her current position, Cathy's career revolved around children and family issues, first during 16 years with the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services in Florida and then for seven years as a full-time childcare worker. She currently serves as Jitegemee's Secretary-Treasurer and lives in Arlington, MA.
Farah Stockman, Executive Director
Farah Stockman is reporter with the Boston Globe and lives in Washington D.C. She lived in Kenya and Tanzania from 1997 to 2000, working first as a full-time teacher at the Katoloni Rehabilitation Centre for street children in Machakos, Kenya and then as a freelance journalist. Farah founded Jitegemee with support from the local community in Kenya. Previous non-profit experience includes directing the Mission Hill Summer Program with Harvard's Phillips Brooks House in 1996.
Keanne Henry
Keanne Henry is the Managing Director of Timilon Development Group, a real estate development firm in Washington, DC. Prior to founding Timilon, Keanne was a consultant for Mercer Management Consulting and a business development analyst with the National Association of Securities Dealers. She received her B.A. in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard College. Keanne lives in Washington, DC.
Allyson Black-Foley
Allyson Black-Foley is a recent graduate of the University of Vermont
with a BA in Environmental Studies and Women's and Gender Studies. She
spent her junior year in Uganda and returned in her senior year to
carry out research for a thesis on women entrepreneurs. Her thesis was
titled Imposed Adjustment: A Case Study of the Impact of Structural
Adjustment Policies on Rural Women Farmers in Eastern Uganda from
1975-present.
